Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
