Intense Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to remain inside as strong winds strike the region.

Intense gales hitting speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 homes without power and led officials to call off over 100 aircraft departures, according to local media.

These gusts are impacting the complete South Island and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have announced uncommon severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for more utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The power cut is primarily influencing residences mostly in the South Island, though authorities say that power was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, and utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being impacted by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a intensive burst, in a incident that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been halted as a result of the winds, whereas certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Meanwhile local leaders have issued a state of emergency, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Extreme Weather

The wild winds on today coincide with tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been described as a "mega strike", calling for better pay and working conditions.

Yet the extreme weather has forced them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or abandoned.

Like conditions are impacting Australia, bringing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Authorities have declared burning restrictions for concern about wildfires.
