RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
